October is when my spending quietly changes shape. Thanksgiving groceries come first, then the early holiday sales, then the gift list I always swear I’ll start sooner. I’ve learned that the best time to set up anything that saves money is before that wave, not in the middle of it. So this is the short list I’d work through this month, in the order I’d actually do it.
1. Park your savings somewhere that pays you to start
I’d begin with Tangerine. New clients get a $50 cash bonus using Orange Key 15888900S1 . The catch is the usual one for bank bonuses: you need to deposit a minimum amount and leave it there for a set period, so read the terms on the page before you commit.
What I like is the timing. If you’re going to set aside money for gifts and travel anyway, putting it in a no-fee account for a couple of months costs you nothing and earns the bonus in the meantime. It’s the one on this list I’d do first, because the other two only pay off once you spend.
2. Turn the purchases you’re already making into cash back
Nobody needs to spend more because of a cash-back tool, and I’d say the opposite: use one only for things already on your list. Two I keep on my own browser:
- Rakuten — $30 Cash Back Bonus, code SIMPLEREFERRAL . I reach for it first because the store list is long and the payout is a straightforward cash-back deposit.
- TopCashback — $25 sign-up bonus, code sluckenuik . I check it alongside Rakuten because rates for the same store often differ.
Signing up for both isn’t redundant. Before I click through to a big purchase, I open both and go with whichever shows the higher rate for that retailer that day. Only one can track a given purchase, so pick one, don’t stack them on the same order.
What I’d skip
I wouldn’t sign up for all of these on the same afternoon just because a list told me to. Each has conditions — a deposit, a qualifying purchase, a minimum before payout — and they’re easy to miss when you’re rushing. I’d do the bank account this week, then set up the cash-back tools the first time I have a real purchase to route through them.
My actual take
If I could only do one thing this month, it would be the bank sign-up, since it needs nothing except money you already have. The cash-back tools are a bonus on top of what you’d spend anyway, and they’re worth having in place before the holiday sales begin, not after.
The full details and current terms for every service I track are on the SimpleReferral home page.
Bonus amounts, codes, and terms can change. I keep the numbers on each guide page current, but always confirm the fine print before you sign up.
