Rakuten vs. TopCashback vs. Great Canadian Rebates: Which One Do I Actually Use?

I've had accounts with all three Canadian cash-back portals for a while now. Here's how I actually decide which one to click through from, retailer by retailer.

A few people have asked me some version of “you list three cash-back portals, which one do I actually sign up for?” Fair question — they all do roughly the same thing (you click through their link before you shop, they get a commission, they pay you a cut of it), so it’s not obvious why you’d want more than one. I run all three, and here’s the honest answer: I don’t pick one, I check whichever has the better rate for that specific retailer before I check out. But if you only want to install one browser habit, here’s how I’d think about it.

The pitch for each

Rakuten is the one I’d point a first-timer to. It’s the most polished app, has a browser extension that reminds you to activate cash back before you land on a retailer’s site, and the sign-up bonus is straightforward: $30 cash back bonus once you make a qualifying purchase, code SIMPLEREFERRAL . It also covers 750+ stores, so the odds it has your regular retailers are high.

TopCashback is the one I check when a purchase is big enough that a percentage point difference matters — a flight, a laptop, an appliance. Its whole marketing angle is “highest cash back guaranteed,” and in my experience it does frequently beat Rakuten’s rate on the same store by a point or two, though not always. The catch with the $25 sign-up bonus (code sluckenuik ) is that it only pays out once you’ve earned $10 in payable cash back within 180 days, so it’s not free money the day you sign up — you do need to actually shop through it.

Great Canadian Rebates is the one fewer people have heard of, which is a little ironic since it’s been running since 2002 — older than either of the other two in the Canadian market. No flashy sign-up bonus here, just a straightforward rebate portal across 700+ Canadian and US retailers. I keep it around mainly because it occasionally has a rate on a specific store that neither of the other two match, and it’s worth a 30-second check before a bigger purchase.

How I actually decide, retailer by retailer

Honestly, this is the part that matters more than which one you sign up for first: cash-back rates on the same retailer differ between portals, sometimes by a lot, and they change without notice. My actual routine before checking out anywhere over about $75:

  1. Open the retailer’s name in two tabs — Rakuten and TopCashback (I check GCR less often, but it’s worth a look for electronics and travel specifically).
  2. Compare the current rate. Whichever is higher, I activate cash back there and check out through that link.
  3. For anything under $75, I don’t bother comparing — I just use whichever portal’s extension already popped up, because the time isn’t worth the difference in a percentage point.

None of this is complicated, it’s just a habit. The only real mistake is assuming one portal is always better — none of the three is, consistently, across every retailer.

If you’re starting from zero

Sign up for Rakuten first. It’s the easiest onboarding, the browser extension does most of the remembering for you, and the $30 cash back bonus is the least conditional of the three sign-up offers. Add TopCashback once you’re making a purchase over a few hundred dollars and want to double-check you’re not leaving a percentage point on the table. Great Canadian Rebates is the one I’d treat as optional — nice to have, not essential, unless you shop a retailer it happens to cover better.

None of these pay out instantly, and all three depend on the retailer actually reporting your purchase back to the portal correctly, which occasionally fails and requires a support ticket. That’s true of every cash-back portal, not specific to these three — just don’t expect the money to land the same week you buy something.

Full terms, current bonus amounts, and sign-up links for all three are on the SimpleReferral home page.

Cash-back rates and bonus terms change often on all three of these — I keep the numbers on each guide page current, but always confirm the rate before you check out.
