Every week I get a couple of messages asking “which one should I actually sign up for?” — so I’m starting a short weekly note here with whatever’s top of mind from running these referral pages. No fluff, just what I’d do in your shoes this week.
Moving for school or a new lease? Sort internet first
Late August is when I see the most traffic on my Fizz and oxio pages, and it’s not a coincidence — it’s move-in season across most Canadian cities. Both let you activate online in a few minutes with no landline required, which matters if you’re setting up a new place from scratch.
If you only need one, I’d pick based on whether you want mobile + internet from the same account (Fizz) or you’re just after internet (oxio tends to be simpler to set up in apartments).
A bank switch that pays for itself
I still think Tangerine‘s $50 cash bonus (Orange Key 15888900S1 ) is one of the easier “free money” moves on this whole site — no monthly fees, and the minimum deposit requirement is low enough that it doesn’t really change how you’d bank anyway. If you’re a student opening a first no-fee chequing account this month, this is the one I’d start with.
Cash back that stacks on stuff you’re already buying
Two that quietly pay for themselves without changing your habits:
- Rakuten — $30 Cash Back Bonus plus ongoing cash back at 750+ stores, code SIMPLEREFERRAL . I mostly use it for back-to-school shopping since it stacks on top of retailer sales.
- Instacart — $10 off first order, code SB4547C . Useful if you’re stocking a new kitchen and don’t want to haul groceries without a car.
My actual take
If I had to pick just one this week: Tangerine. It’s the least “sign up and forget about it” of the bunch — you get a real bonus for something you were going to do anyway (have a chequing account), and it takes about ten minutes.
Full details, current bonus amounts, and terms for every service I track are on the SimpleReferral home page.
Bonus amounts and terms can change — I keep the numbers on each guide page current, but always double-check the fine print before you sign up.
